The flat in Middlesbrough. It was shared housing, and very cramped, but considering how little time we spent in it each day, it was bearable. The only thing I found unbearable about it was a total lack of garden, either in front or in back. The front opened directly onto a sidewalk, and the back was a small bit of fenced concrete yard with a tool shed and a clothesline. I was born and raised a country girl, so we spent a lot of time in local parks where I could see, smell and touch growing things.
