A cannon sits ready with its snout pointing in the general direction of the Scott Monument. It serves as a visible reminder that in addition to being a popular tourist attraction, Edinburgh Castle remains a fully staffed and operational military facility. At 1:00 p.m. daily, the One O'Clock Gun is discharged from the castle, providing an audible reminder that can be heard throughout downtown Edinburgh.
